Adult Stem Cell Research in Houston E-mail

Comments by J. C. Spencer

Adult stem cells when abundant in the body bring health and healing. With fewer and fewer adult stem cells, the vital organs grow weak. We previously reported how specific sugars stimulated proliferation of stem cells. Information on a fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) paper is available in our book store at www.endowmentmed.org

Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston have a serious adult stem cell research program. I applaud Emerson C. Perin, MD, PhD and his Stem Cell Center at St. Luke’s Hospital. The Stem Cell Center is dedicated to the study of adult stem cells and their role in treating diseases of the heart and the circulatory system. Through many clinical and pre-clinical studies, St. Luke’s has come to realize the potential of stem cells to help patients suffering from cardiovascular disease.

Trehalose Inhibits Inflammatory Cytokine Production E-mail
Trehalose Inhibits Inflammatory Cytokine Production

Comments by J. C. Spencer

A research paper on the sugar trehalose is to be published in the August 2009 issue of the Oral Biology, a multidisciplinary journal of oral and cranofacial sciences that shows trehalose inhibits inflammatory conditions in mice. This University science paper verifies that additional research is needed to determine if trehalose inhibits inflammation in humans. This paper adds to the many published papers on the structure function of trehalose.

The Endowment for Medical Research has conducted Nutritional Pilot Surveys using trehalose. Also, significant educational and research information concerning trehalose can be found at www.endowmentmed.org and at www.DiabeticHope.com . You may request Evaluation Forms or they may be downloaded from the Home Page.

Please submit information if you have experienced health benefits from using the sugar trehalose. Your participation may help many others in the future.

Sugars and Colitis
Comments by J. C. Spencer

Over the last few years here at The Endowment for Medical Research, we have conducted Nutritional Pilot Surveys using different sugars and have had two papers published showing improved brain function in Alzheimer’s patients.

ambrotosedigdissci.bmpA new study shows encouraging results in induced colitis in rats when using several plant-derived polysaccharides.

The Abstract is below and the complete paper may be downloaded from Digestive Diseases and Sciences or from our Download Store at www.endowmentmed.org at no charge.

Trehalose plays a new role in nanotechnology and research of cell walls E-mail
Trehalose plays a new role in nanotechnology and research of cell walls.

Comments by J. C. Spencer

Trehalose plays a new role in nanotechnology and the research of cell walls. The study of the capsid, the protein shell of a virus, will show us how to better protect ourselves from viruses. Structural analyses of capsid protein is the means to categorize viruses into families. Collaborative work around the world is helping our understanding of the cell and viruses. Rice University Houston has just pinpointed AND MADE X-RAY IMAGES of the five million atoms in the viral coat used by hundreds of viruses. This picture is worth a thousand words.

The report today is from two published works: Rice University and the role trehalose is playing in the research at other institutes.

We Have Lost A Dear Friend E-mail

Rayburne Goen, MD, one of our favorite Medical Doctors went to his just reward early Wednesday morning (Feb 11th) at the age of 94. His daughter, Becky Stough, said he was very peaceful with all of his family around. "He was very happy and ready". This wonderful family doctor and friend will be missed by many. His zest for life and enthusiasm for sharing the gifts of Glycomics is unforgettable. Dr. Goen dedicated himself to spread the story of Glycomics to his fellow physicians.

Rayburne Goen, MD participated in the Glycomics Conferences sponsored by The Endowment for Medical Research. Dr. Goen took early Retirement at age 81. He has four children; two are MDs. Because of Glycomics, Dr. Goen became healthier in his 90s than at age 85 when he had 21 personal old-age disorders. In four months on glyconutritional supplementation, he became symptom-free of 20 of his 21 ailments and he was able to discontinue all prescription and OTC drugs. His experience and the experiences of his patients caused him to lecture across the United States and Canada about glycomics.

Dr. Goen received his M.D. degree from University of Colorado in 1939 and was a Family Physician for 60 years. He served as Lt. Col., Medical Corps, US Army, in WWII from 1941 to 1946. He became a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1947. He was Clinical Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine, Tulsa.

The arrangement details are at the Boston Avenue Methodist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Anyone wishing to send cards to the Family of Dr. Goen may send them to 26549 North 3980 Way, Ochelata, Oklahoma 74051.

Trehalose Sugar Study in Obese Men E-mail
Trehalose Sugar Study in Obese Men

Comments by J. C. Spencer

Does the sugar trehalose contribute to diabetes or fat loss? This has been a question for quite some time. We have antidotal reports that trehalose is low glycemic, that sugar cravings are reduced, and that trehalose is a healthful sugar, but more testing is needed.

Now comes a clinical research paper from a randomized, double-blind, crossover study designed to assess the effects of trehalose which shows that indeed trehalose helps the insulin and glucose concentrations in obese men.
