Area students encouraged to eat healthier snacks

Comments by J. C. Spencer
Some schools are thinking more about healthful foods, less junk foods, and health sugars at school. This article helps show the way and is descriptive of things to come. There is a shift in the way people are thinking about healthcare, wellness, and prevention especially for their children. Candy, cupcakes, and other desserts need not disappear when we use good sugars like trehalose in the recipes even when sugar is the lead ingredient. I applaud the writer, the school and Gateway Newspaper for this article.

The days of school parties with cupcakes and candy as treats are fading quickly.

With raising concerns of inactivity, obesity and poor eating habits, school districts have developed nutrition and wellness policies to encourage healthy lifestyles.

And that means no junk food.

A new study provides some of the best evidence to date that breast-feeding can make children smarter
Comments by J. C. Spencer:

Scientists again prove that mother’s breast milk helps children for the next number of years, perhaps for life. Results of a study of 14,000 children causes doctors to scratch their heads. Glycomics, the study of sugars, holds the answer to why children who consume the sugars found in mother’s breast milk perform better.

Breast Feeding Results
Here at The Endowment for Medical Research, we have learned, and have much supporting evidence, that indeed children make better grades for many years when they have these sugars. Adults who consume these sugars even in adult life perform better mentally. We have had two Alzheimer’s papers published from our Alzheimer’s Nutritional Pilot Surveys that showed very positive results. More research is needed and we are committed to helping improve brain function in children and adults without drugs or harmful side effects by using certain sugars found in nature.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A new study provides some of the best evidence to date that breast-feeding can make children smarter, an international team of researchers said on Monday.

NEWS RELEASE
For Immediate Release

Subject: Houston public charity to evaluate effects of the sugar trehalose on devastating Huntington’s disease (HD).

May 5, 2008 (Houston) Huntington’s is one of the most devastating health challenges known to humans. Huntington’s is hereditary and children normally have the gene but do not develop the tremors until later in life. There is no known cure for this deadly neurodegenerative disease.

J. C. Spencer, CEO of The Endowment for Medical Research announced that the non-profit organization is seeking major funding for Huntington’s clinical trials. “Meanwhile, we have designed a low budget self funding, self or family evaluation system, to gather needed data showing benefits from the sugar trehalose.”

Laboratory animal research using trehalose has already shown that this sugar may be beneficial in some neurodegenerative diseases. Other research indicates that it may strengthen cell membrane under certain conditions.

The Endowment for Medical Research hopes to gather data from a few thousand participants . . .

Toxic RNA Contributes to Neurodegeneration

Commentary by J. C. Spencer

Mitochondria micrograph source: University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB)
Mitochondria micrograph source: University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB)
Researchers in neurodegenerative diseases at Howard Hughes Medical Institute have linked toxic RNA with Huntington’s disease. This significant discovery reveals the importance for improving the function of the mitochondria where the RNA is manufactured as well as correcting the altered gene expression that causes Huntington’s. After reading this report, connect the dots to the published Huntington’s paper entitled, Trehalose alleviates polyglutamine-mediated pathology in mouse model of Huntington disease. Please understand, these two papers are dealing with mice and fruitflies. Further research is needed in the human population with Huntington’s. This new information may give us an indication as to why we are having positive results in those participating in our self funding, self evaluation Trehalose Nutritional Pilot Survey. All that is required to participate in this Huntington study is for the individual or family to complete a self evaluation form each month while using trehalose over time. The longer a Huntington’s patient is in the study the more data can be gathered. The Forms can be downloaded from the Home Page at www.endowmentmed.org

Sugar Science Forum - Featured Abstract

Here is the Abstract from a significant Alzheimer’s / Trehalose research paper entitled,

J.C. Spencer

"Trehalose differentially inhibits aggregation and neurotoxicity of beta-amyloid 40 and 42". This research was done by Ruitian Liu,  Hedieh Barkhordarian, Sharareh Emadi, Chan Beum Park and Michael R. Sierks,  Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, Arizona State University, Box 876006, Tempe, AZ 85287-6006, USA. While this is heavy reading, it is one of our most popular postings on the Forum.
The Abstract
A key event in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis is the conversion of the peptide beta-amyloid (A(beta)) from its soluble monomeric form into various aggregated morphologies in the brain. Preventing aggregation of A(beta) is being actively pursued as a primary therapeutic strategy for treating AD. Trehalose, a simple disaccharide, has been shown to be effective in preventing the deactivation of numerous proteins and in protecting cells against stress. Here, we show that trehalose is also effective in inhibiting aggregation of A(beta) and reducing its cytotoxicity, although it shows differential effects toward A(beta)40 and A(beta)42. When co-incubated with A(beta)40, trehalose inhibits formation . . .

Genetic Testing - Huntington’s - New Laws and Insurance
Genetic Testing

Editor’s comment by J. C. Spencer: Genetic testing reveals the predisposition of the genes to cause or allow specific diseases like Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s and other devastating challenges. We are living in a new era of disastrous sickness care where prevention is vitally needed. A new focus on a wellness system is the answer to the current crisis. Exciting news is that glycomics may offer the possibility for turning off the genes that cause or allow Huntington’s. Science papers and our own pilot surveys and imperial evidence at The Endowment for Medical Research indicate that may be what specific sugars are achieving.

By Will Dunham
WASHINGTON, April 27 (Reuters) - Americans may be much more willing to get genetic tests showing predisposition to diseases with this week's expected final passage by Congress of a bill barring discrimination based on one's genetics, experts say.

Expand Your MIND – Improve Your Brain

Expand Your Mind Improve Your BrianFrom the Foreword by Robert K. Murray, MD, PhD:
I came to know JC Spencer via his founding of The Endowment for Medical Research (Houston, Texas) and through his organization (and that of his many inspiring colleagues) of the first two Glycomics Medical Conferences sponsored by The Endowment. A major aim of these very successful and well attended Conferences was to inform healthcare workers and others of the new scientific area of Glycomics and its possible application to helping individuals suffering from chronic neurodegenerative conditions.

The Top 10 Functional Food Trends in America

Comment by J. C. Spencer:
Replacing bad foods with better foods for optimal health is the bend in the road that everyone MUST take or the bend in the road will be the end of the road.  The obvious paradigm shift in healthcare is moving rapidly toward more and better supplementation and functional foods.  The general public is demanding it.  We are seeing a revival of what the father of medicine, Hippocrates said, “Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food.“

Medical News Fri 18 April, 2008 Newswise

Foods that may provide a health benefit beyond basic nutrition, identified as functional foods, are becoming a key part of everyday life, according to a new article appearing in Food Technology, a publication of the scientific Institute of Food Technologists.
